Back to Basics – Fashion Sense and the Emergence of Hanfu (Han style clothing) in Contemporary China
This talk will address both the historical and cultural development of fashion, clothing and consumption in twentieth-century China, with a special focus on an intriguing phenomenon of the contemporary emergence of Han-style clothing. Using a variety of sources, from fiction to art, from legal codes to advertisements, it will discuss this new fashion and its consumption in relationship to the intertwined issues of class, ethnicity, nationalism, gender and globalization.
