Reason #18938 cops on campus are a bad thing? A student at UCLA was tasered by cops for failing to produce his ID card in the library.

UCPD officers shot a student several times with a Taser inside the Powell Library CLICC computer lab late Tuesday night before taking him into custody.

No university police officers were available to comment further about the incident as of 3 a.m. Wednesday, and no Community Service Officers who were on duty at the time could be reached.

At around 11:30 p.m., CSOs asked a male student using a computer in the back of the room to leave when he was unable to produce a BruinCard during a random check. The student did not exit the building immediately.

    a lot of people have been saying that the kid should have just stood up, without realizing that he gets tased 4-5 times, which temporarily paralyzes you from the electric shock, and on top of that he yells at the cops that he has a medical condition. this whole thing is really disturbing and i hope that the normally passive UCLA students will rally and do something about it.

    justin, the news links will tell you what happened. and if you read through them, it’s very clear that it was an excessive and unwarranted use of force. plus, the police threaten at least one person who asks for their names and badge numbers with getting tased herself.

    Somehow I doubt that the police just jumped on the kid for the hell of it. The footage is disturbing, to be sure, but we don’t see what prompted the whole scene. We just catch it halfway through.
