The Penguin Plunge involves running into CT’s freezing, wintry waters to raise money to help community members and Special Olympic athletes and programs.
Here’s how it works: Jessica Markowitz ’08 created a team called “Wesleyan Penguins” and SOCT has set them up with a web page to fundraise. Each “penguin” must (/is encouraged to) raise $50 to participate. Donations can be made using a credit card on the secure website or checks can be mailed in or brought the day of the plunge.
The event itself takes place on Saturday March 3 at Crystal Lake here in Middletown. Teams can dress in costumes, etc. and there are all sorts of prizes for spirit and creativity. The only required item of clothing is a swim suit… Once all the teams are there, the plunge begins. Group by group, teams take the plunge and run into the cold waters of Crystal Lake wearing only swimsuits and a bowtie. Hence, the “Penguin Plunge.” You don’t need to get fancy- just a quick dip (or longer if you wish!) and out!
If you’d like more information or have questions, email jmarkowitz@wes.
If interested in participating, go here and click on the button that says “Join Jessica’s Team.” The password is “wesleyan,” then enter your info and register. If you need to search for the team, search for “Wesleyan Penguins”.
Also, If anyone wants to pass on the actual plunging but are still interested in offering support, please donate to the team or come the day of the event to cheer them on! Last year they had a few people there to support and it really helped pump them up.
