“I am really into music. mainly indie stuff, some more mainstream indie and then really cool artsy stuff that not many have heard of.”

I am the leaver of the original “Note to self.” I apologize for any implication that all of the class of ’11 is part of the “Indier than thou” competition that can tends to happen here (*twitch*).My complaint with the term indie is that it doesn’t describe anything about the music one is listening to at all. AT ALL. It merely states that the music is under a minor record label…or just implies that most people haven’t heard of such a band. If that’s some source of pride, then godspeed. I prefer, however, to categorize things by, well, actual genres of music.

The term indie became inappropriate when people began competing over who was “indie-er” and dropping band names like a like an insecure waspy social climber. That being said, there isn’t really an effective alternate term to describe music, which is simultaneously non-conformist, not well known, eclectic, and for those reasons appealing to many Wes students. By the way, I’m an 11’er don’t discount us all!

Note to self: remember how fucking insecure i felt when i went into this year and make an effort to give 2011 at least a little bit of advice so that the people who’re avoiding them based on a single damn quote they made to people they didn’t know won’t wreck wesleyan for them.(no hate implied, i just don’t like the idea of people getting discouraged before they get here)

Note to self: avoid any member of the class of ’11 who will represent yet ANOTHER person who uses the term “Indie.”
