The sky is falling: Financial woes

The stock market continues its downward slide. American manufacturing has been disappearing for years, and suddenly people noticed. And, oh yeah, tuition is climbing another 5.5 percent:

The increases in student charges are attributable to growth in salary and benefits costs, as well as energy and other costs that outpace general inflation. […] Thus, next year student charges will total $46,936 for first-year students and sophomores and $48,318 for juniors and seniors.

Would it be too much to ask for a raise in work-study wages?
