Bring your iPod back from the dead

Rachel Monas ’07 sends us a last ditch quick fix for the sad iPod screen of death:

If the icon comes up on the screen, your options (according to Apple) are basically to either try the one thing that they recommend on the support site which never works or send it back. BUT what they aren’t telling you is that you can simply whack it on the palm of your hand (similar motion to packing a pack of cigarettes), hitting each side/edge of the iPod a few times with pretty good force, and I SWEAR to you it will work. It’s worked for me and two friends already. It is AMAZING if your warranty has expired and you are full of anger at the idea of having to buy a new iPod. I’m still pretty full of anger that Apple doesn’t tell people how easy it is to fix this problem!

See the Digg page here, with a link to the original forum thread. Looks like at first people went through the effort of dismantling the thing and jiggling the bare harddrive, but later discovered that thwacking the thing works just as well.

in high school we used a similar technique on dead/dying computers, and any other delicate equipment that failed to function properly (or at least didn’t do what we wanted it to). We called this ‘russian-ing’

yeah, i’ve definitely used this many times to get my ipod up and running… though i doubt it would work for an ipod with a flash drive.
