Adopt-A-Mantis

The mantids have now reached their third instar, which basically means that they’re cannibalizing each other like no tomorrow and I can’t keep them together anymore. That said: I know some of you were interested in acquiring a mantis. If you want one, e-mail me at xsun@wes. The rest I plan on releasing.

What you get:

• 1 third instar Chinese praying mantis–About 1 inch long
• 1 mini-habitat (stick and paper towel in a cup. Should last a few more instars)
• Instructions.

What you need:

• Food. They need to be fed AT LEAST every other day, since they’re still so young. What do they eat? Anything smaller than they are. They’ve been reared on Drosophila, which are now almost too small for them to catch.
• Healthy appreciation for this sort of thing. They don’t kill what they catch, they just start eating, so if flailing headless insects freaks you out, maybe this isn’t for you.
