Student Psych Surveys Skewed…

Mary Lauran ’10 sends this tip in:

You know how you can get paid five bucks if you participate in a study for the psych department? Well, apparently we’re contributing to a tendency to survey convenience samples of college students who don’t accurately represent the greater population. Like all cool tendencies, this one has a catch phrase: “science of the sophomore.” Today’s Wall Street Journal has an article about it here.

Working with college students is just that– convenient. Handing out a survey and $5 and then analyzing the data is a great way for psych majors to learn basic research skills. Most of this data isn’t used for publishable papers anyway. I agree that college students are way overrepresented in psych studies but I just wanted to give a bit of an explanation for the plethora of surveys and small tasks.-Psych major

I’m sorry, this comment isn’t actually about the post. I just thought it was funny and wanted to share it with the Wesleying staff.

Apparently, the word “wesleying” is defined on urbandictionary.com as “finger of your penis hole” and the example used is, “George Bush is wesleying instead of being a good president.”
