Daniel Family Commons

Everyone’s favorite Tenured Radical got to eat at the Daniel Family Commons for free. In the meantime, check out Bon Appetit’s write-up of the place:

Welcome to the Commons!

This faculty/staff dining room will play a vital role on the campus. Having an option where faculty and staff can dine with students is crucial to maintaining and enhancing a sense of community. Here, in a relaxed atmosphere, you can quietly gather your thoughts before afternoon classes or chat with colleagues and students. We encourage you to invite students as your guests to the Commons! Bon Appétit will strive to make this dining experience simple, easy to use, and of course with a delicious culinary selection. Guests can choose to feast their way through the Lunch Buffet, which will change daily with choices from two meat entrées, one vegetarian entrée, and your starch or vegetable as a side. Take as much of each as you would like!

You can also choose the Soup and Salad bar as an option. Enjoy the abundant salad selections freshly prepared each day, or savor a homemade soup. Don?t expect to see the same thing twice! Our chef takes pride in generating as much variety in his menu as possible. With offerings such as Asian Pasta Salad, Arugula Mesclun Salad, or Scallop and Bay Shrimp Ceviche, you certainly won?t be bored with the Salad bar!

Freshly-baked bread and butter and ice water will be available at each table upon arrival. Your beverage selection consists of a variety of fountain sodas as well as coffee and tea. Our server will be available to take your drink order and bring it directly to the table!

For us non-faculty, we can find the weekly Marketplace menus here.

The Radical is always pleased to get a hat tip from Wesleying: I did discover yesterday, to contribute a minor correction, that students can go to Daniel FC with a faculty member, ergo I was accompanied yesterday by a student guest. It was very pleasant: start buttering up your faculty now and cadge those invites.Encouraging faculty to talk to each other is not a bad value either, my friends, even if it means a short time away from our beloved students in a “safe space” : ) You have dormitories, after all, that are entirely dedicated to you and your needs.(Note: my use of emoticons — see above — is so rare as to be almost unintelligible. But let me note that if an eating space prpimarily devoted to faculty is undemocratic, so is grading, the need for letters of recommendaiton, the admissions process, and getting shut out of a great class during pre-reg.)Oddly, we also ate for “free,” since the President stopped off to chat with me and said student, and in my giddy delight I neglected to pay the bill. However, I shall hustle over and make good on that today so they don;t change my name to the Tenured Freeloader.TR
