SMBSearch…Sort of

No news yet re: agwilliams or pcao. In the meantime: here‘s an engine you can download yourself. I haven’t tried it out since I’m in a woodframe, but do let us know how it works out.

Also, Sam Friedman ’10 wants you to know that the issue with Wesleying + Apple seems to be a Firefox-specific issue. Load up in Safari, sez he,

Does anyone know who I can contact for exact instructions for setting up a SMBSearch? I have a computer I could host it on (although it’s at home, and I’d have to get it here), but it would make it a lot easier if a) someone had precise instructions or b) someone could put me into contact with someone who has done this before.

Agwilliams graduated, and pcao lives in a woodframe, so I don’t think either of them is likely to be hosting a SMBSearch this year. I seem to remember something about how under bdolangavitt, the actual computer was housed in the helpdesk, is there any possibility we can do something like that again?

I’m going to try a few things and see if I can get seek42 working on my laptop. It won’t be a permanent solution, but we might at least be able to see how/if it will work. If anyone has any advice, I’d love it, because I’ve never done anything like this before.

The idea of seek42 would be someone to install it on a linux box and, since it has a web based interface, allow people with any OS to do the search, much like the bdolangavitt/agwilliams of old. Except I’d imagine this implementation is a wee bit saner.
