A RESOLUTION SEEKING IMPEACHMENT OF PRESIDENT BUSH AND VICE PRESIDENT CHENEY

WHEREAS, George W. Bush and Richard Cheney have lied and manipulated the intelligence process to deceive the citizens and the Congress of the United States by fabricating a threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction and an alleged relationship between Iraq and Al Qaida, this being done in order to justify the use of the United States armed forces against the nation of Iraq in a manner damaging to our national security;

WHEREAS, George W. Bush and Richard Cheney lied in order to lead our country into war based on propaganda and false statements which subvert the powers of the Congress, violate the public trust, and overstep the bounds of the executive office. That in this they subverted the national security interests of the United States by setting the stage for the loss of more than 3,700 United States service members plus the loss of more than 650,000 Iraqi citizens since the United States invasion. The financial loss of more than $500 billion in war expenses, which has increased our federal debt, the loss of military readiness within the United States armed services, through over extension and lack of training and equipment, this leading to the loss of United States credibility in world affairs and decades of likely blowback created by the invasion of Iraq;

WHEREAS, The President and his administration’s use of unwarranted wire taps of American citizens which directly violates our Fourth Amendment right to be protected from unreasonable searches and seizures, our rights to privacy, and it violates the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act;

WHEREAS, George W. Bush has abused his power by violating the constitutional and international rights of citizens and non-citizens by indefinitely holding them as detainees, without access to legal council, without charges, without the opportunity to appear before a judge. During detentions, people are routinely subjected to abusive treatment, with documented cases of torture. This violates both the Geneva Convention and our own Constitutional prohibition against cruel and unusual punishments, as well as violating our right to due process. The recent legislation dealing with detainees now specifies that the writ of habeas corpus is suspended for anyone, U.S. citizens as well as non-citizens, who have been deemed ‘enemy combatants.’ That means that anyone whom the government determines is a threat can be stripped of their constitutional rights and held, without charges, without access to the American legal system, without due process, for as long as the government decides is necessary; and,

WHEREAS, George W. Bush has committed high crimes and misdemeanors as he has repeatedly violated the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and the Torture Convention, which under Article VI of the Constitution is considered a treaty;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Middletown Democratic Town Committee that George W. Bush and Richard Cheney, by their conduct warrant impeachment and trial.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be sent to the Connecticut Congressional Delegation and the State Central Committee of the Connecticut Democratic Party.
