Office 2007 for cheap(er)

Until April 30th, 2008, Microsoft is offering its Office 2007 Ultimate edition to students for $59.95. Pricey, yes, but considering the package normally costs more than $600, it makes sense that the their site is called The Ultimate Steal.

Well, maybe. Let me take this opportunity to say: I fucking hate Office 2007. I spent all summer working with it and it drove me up the wall. For instance, what the hell is this?!:

I mean, okay, it’s Excel, but it took me 15 minutes just to figure out that you have to press the Windows button to reach the “File” menu. Screenshots really can’t capture how much everything has been moved around. Instead of drop-down options, for example, they have tabbed browsing that I found counter-intuitive and too crowded to navigate.

If you’re less dense than I am, however, you may find a 90% discount hard to pass up. But, uhm, do try out the demo first.

I concur on the open office business. It is just as good. I use it on my mac all the time. Versions exist for Linux and Windows as well. Free is so much cheaper!

i second the openoffice endorsement…don’t currently use it myself, but that’s just ’cause my computer came with office & i’m too lazy to switch…when I get around to dumping windows…

You can get the non-Ultimate Edition for much cheaper at the student computer store. Its $10 or $15 there. Also, its great, the navigation is way better than Excel once you get used to it.
