Chalk chalk chalk chalk chalk

Think it’s a load of bullshit that chalking is banned?
Think it’s even more fundamentally fucked that the administration should have any say in the issue?

Cast your vote for chalking through action!

What: A Participatory Chalking Session—Come and write whatever you feel you should be allowed to say!
Where: Outside Usdan, on the concrete patio with chairs and tables.
When: This weekend! Saturday, November 3rd, 3:30pm precisely.
Who: Wesleyan Students for Democratic Society

Chalk will be supplied, look for the people with plastic bags.

11:01 – what the hell do you mean? How is chalking anonymous? It’s certainly less anonymous than my writing about experiences I’ve had with those kinds of hate on the ACB or here. People don’t see me when I do it in the privacy of my room, but if I do it outside, people can see me doing it. And that’s just a load of BS. How is confronting hate speech through chalking going to do anything about it? “OMG, I’m so oppressed at an elite liberal arts college like Wesleyan. OMG, I need to chalk about it on the sidewalk for shock value. That’ll totally show the racist/misogynistic/sexist/homophobic people!!!” Chalking is pathetic, and so are you.

4:35 Have you ever been a victim of flagrant racism? Sexism? Homophobic remarks? The anonymity of chalking allows for these kinds of hate, and without accountability it can easily spiral out of control. The “If you don’t like it, don’t read it.” mentality can easily fall apart in the face of hate speech. Thanks to out 4 year institutional memory, nobody even remembers _why_ chalking is banned.

this is fucking dumb. STOP TALKING ABOUT CHALKING, and JUST GO FUCKING CHALK IF THAT’s WHAT YOU WANT. everyone keeps talking talking talking… but no one actually goes out and chalks. so the administration will erase it? GO CHALK AGAIN! the only way to win is to make chalking NORMAL, to make it occur everywhere, everyday, and for legitimate purposes. JUST FUCKING DO IT AND SHUT UP!

i never understood the logic of responding to someone’s criticism of something as “trivial” by saying “then why are you wasting your time talking about how trivial it is?” pointing out that something is trivial could be a totally worthwhile exercise, and the act of doing so might not be trivial at all.
