Oberlin is having some issues with its new slogan. Slogan? Yeah.
Some Obies say the unabashedly cheesy “change the world” line was what attracted them to the school and worry that “fearless” will appeal to a less socially conscious crowd. They already believe younger students are becoming too Banana Republic, too reluctant to ride a unicycle at the Friday drunkfests on the green.
The entire situation calls to mind the Independent Ivy debacle at Wes a few years back:
Wesleyan University adopts new marketing slogan: “Wesleyan, the Independent Ivy.” Objecting students plaster campus with homemade signs: “Reebok, the Independent Nike,” “Hydrox, the Independent Oreo,” “R.C., the Independent Coke.”
In other news, I propose unicycles at Friday drunkfests on Foss Hill.
