Why Beauty Matters

One of professor Tanya Rosenblat‘s claim to fame is her work regarding the relationship between beauty and success. You can read her 2005 paper, “Why Beauty Matters” about the beauty premium here (pdf)

A synopsis:

beautiful people are not more competent.
beautiful people are more confident.
confidence leads beautiful people and pretty much everyone else to believe that they are more competent (also smarter, healthier, and less awkward).
perceived competence results in higher financial rewards.
so keep that in mind when you’re applying for internships this summer or jobs or grad schools or whatever.
(the picture says: Cam Maloni ’09 is beautiful and competent. Cam for America’s Next Smartest Model!)

Don’t forget the other side of the story. People think that beautiful people are more intelligent, more successful, etc. so they give them more opportunities.

ok this is nuts. Tanya is talented and she has a lot of potential. If wesleyan denied her tenure it’ll come back to bite them in the ass because she’ll just end up famous and tenured at Harvard.

Definitely true, heard it from Richie Adelstein. Though getting laid off isn’t exactly the right way to put it, she was denied tenure.

she’s one of the best teachers at the school, not to mention her potential because of her young age, but the administration decided to lay her off next year. this wonderful teacher who is loved by her students won’t be coming back. it’s really annoying.
