Wesleyan costs twice as much as my single widowed mother makes in an entire year, and their financial aid packages don’t help students like me for shit. I’m sorry I had to leave, but I just couldn’t afford it. I mean, being charged $2,000 extra because I’m expected to secure a summer job 3,000 miles away is ridiculous. I don’t have the connections or experience to gain an internship, and my hometown consists of 6,000 people. Where the fuck am I supposed to find a job? Wesleyan is a good school, but my family would’ve lost everything had I continued to attend. I wish I’d gone to one of those other schools. Now I’m not attending school at all.

8:43 – I’m not estrella, but it’s common knowledge among anyone whose seen any of the official publications from the Wesleyan annual fund that the full cost of educating a student at Wes is 66K. Go find a pamphlet or ask a Red and Black caller.

We won’t know how magnanimous the other schools are until they publish subsequent charts in latter years depicting the (un)changing socioeconomic composition of their student bodies over time. These are mostly brilliant public relations moves that buy goodwill, particularly among members of Congress who are upset at large “nonprofit” institutions of higher ed racking up billions in endowment and failing to serve the public interest. However, given the state of public education and standard elite college admission practices, it’s highly unlikely that these changes will translate to substantial changes in the number of students from US families in the bottom two quintiles of income (unless also accompanied by aggressive changes in recruitment). Much remains to be seen.In fact, this chart probably most hurts us among the self-identified “liberal” upper middle class families who profess to care about socioeconomic diversity. If they really did, their children would be attending middle and lower tier state schools (ie, not including places like Berkeley, UMich and UVA).

a few things.first of all we’re at the bottom partially because of alpha-order (it looks like we’re tied with at least about 5 other schools) and this list is of “elite colleges and universities” who have actually stepped up and done stuff to fix the problem, so being at the bottom of the list is troubling, but lets keep in mind what that really means here.4:42, 4:55, 5:08 – as to the new buildings, they were/will be actually built partially from donations by the families whose names they bear and bonds given by the state/fed government for this purpose.4:41, 8:05 – the cost of wesleyan per year is $66k meaning that everyone gets at least $19k from the “silent” scholarship. I think that hardly qualifies as the school screwing you over. Its more like the first commenter said, Wes’s endowment is dwarfed by some of these other schools.

Actually, though I think everyone and their mother know where I stand on this, this chart doesn’t make clear how many kids fall under these categories at each school. So while our threshold is low, we may actually be doing better at recruiting more low-income students than say, Vassar, though its threshold is higher. It’s a factor to consider.-Holly

Makes me think I should’ve applied to more places than just Wesleyan. I probably wouldn’t have to be working three work-study jobs at 80% of the schools on that list.

its obvious anyone hating on the new science building is NOT a science major. if you’ve been in the labs, you know wesleyan needs this badly. plus, it’ll increase our visibility and prestige, and attract better faculty, as previously stated.

Also, rich people like to have their names on buildings. Perhaps we should have the Usdan financial aid package.

also, the new science building is going to do a shit ton for this school – up our prestige/reputation, attract great faculty members, and help out science students a lot. it’s expensive, but in a few years after it’s finished it will have been worth it. and if we keep investing well, our endowment will hopefully keep growing. tuition hurts me as much as anyone else, but I think the new science building is a great investment.

stop hating on roth. the molecular and life sciences building was planned before he got hired. you cant blame everything wrong with the school on roth just because he made a few questionable comments.

I’m no expert, but last time I checked, we were spending zillions on a new science building and wrecking a surplus of money, which could be used to help low income families afford to send their children here. But I assume that someone smart is in charge….
