Butt B is EastCo

Earlier this year a taped sign in the Butterfield B courtyard that used to read “HPPI” (for the Health Professions Partnership Initiative office located on the 1st floor) was torn down to reveal a more prominent sign (above) reading “East College“, causing reactions ranging from apathy to mild curiosity among residents who thought they were living in a fairly unremarkable dorm on a far side of campus… until now!

You knew about WestCo, and North College, and maybe even South College, but EastCo? Why the (literal) cover-up? Why expose it now? Could Butt B have been intended at some point to be an eastern counterpart to that more prominent dorm in the West? Is this some kind of passive-aggressive attempt at re-branding by ResLife?

In that case, what’s next for this latently cardinally-directed building? A personality? A cohesive sense of community? More noise? I can’t be the only mildly curious to hear answers.

My dad went here in the 80s and was an RA in the Butts. He described East College as Westco’s good-clean-fun-oriented counterpart.

EastCo and WestCo both used to be residential colleges with faculty and students living together and taking classes in them.I think EastCo focused on math and sciency things and WestCo on the humanities? This was when the Butt dorms were new, I believe. Anyway, EastCo didn’t last for very long.I can’t remember where I learned that, but I bet Suzy Taraba could tell us a lot more.

7:17 – I was actually wondering the exact same thing today as I left South College. the only way it may make sense is if it was named East College because it’s slightly east of West College. I mean, north college and south college make sense because they were built ages ago. I guess westco and eastco were just kind of haphazardly named in response..?even WestCo is slightly south of SouthCo. RightO

Just for some context, the Butterfields used to be called the Lawn Avenue Dorms (or something like that. You can look it up in the University Archives).

I was absolutely kidding about that Mad, I’ve got nothing against ResLife and I wasn’t serious about any cover-up. I meant passive-aggressive in the sense that there was no explanation for the change, I didn’t know about the HPPI business.

intriguing!but yeah the reason why the HPPI sign was taken off recently is because the program is ending.EastCo pride

Are you joking about this being a passive-aggressive attempt at re-branding by ResLife? If not, why all the Reslife hate? Yes, the whole Zonker Harris Day business is very silly, but ResLife is generally a good part of the administration. EastCo hasn’t existed for a while – I don’t think there’s any conspiracy here. It’s just cheaper to cover up a sign with its new identity rather than install an entirely new one.

Back in the day(mid eighties)a pre-frosh would receive applications for both West and East Co with the understanding that anyone who applied to one would never apply to the other.-AA (anonymous alum)

lol. I noticed this my sophomore year, and The Mystery of the Missing College was finally resolved… for me, anyway. Thanks for bringing this revelation into the public light, Sheek!
