From the Yale Daily News:
The YCC was given $140,000 dollars for Spring Fling; Wesleyan was given $56,000 for theirs. But Wesleyan is getting a lot more with their dirty liberal arts dollar. Instead of trying to check a whole lot of boxes – like our mix of pop-punk bullshit (Jimmy Eat World), legitimate hip-hop (The Roots), and unattractive/untalented crooning (Sean Kingston) – Wesleyan assembled a line-up, that while not homogenous, works harmoniously together.
Zachary Fuhrer, the writer of the article, also provides a spot-on characterization of Jimmy Eat World:
Now, if I were in 7th grade again, and had a lifetime supply of white and black sweat bands and Dep hair gel, I might be down with Jimmy Eat World playing at Spring Fling. But even Jimmy Eat World fans didn’t listen to any song other than “The Middle.”
Well, I dunno… “Sweetness” was at least decent…
It’s hard to tell through the online medium, but I wasn’t actually mocking Jimmy Eat World… Though I never fit the attitude associated with it, I’m still totally into emo music…i just went to their spring fling and it was pretty awesome…….=================================jackkatewinslethttp://www.hookup-tonite.com

the roots were excellent, but Jimmy Eat World and Kingston were garbage. Plus, Jimmy Eat World headlined…which made zero sense. Sean Kingston sang only 3.5 of his own songs. And by sang, I mean went “yeah…c’mon…kingston, kingston…this college is smart…ladies, throw your hands up.”

We can’t hire the whole group idiot. We only have 40,000 dollars! If you would rather see Jimmy Eat World play watch MTV DIPSHIT.

I just went to their spring fling and it was pretty awesome. At least they hired entire groups, not just one member.

why is anyone complaining about our spring fling? oh my god, we have a very good line up. i have never personally listened to any of the acts, and i don’t plan on starting (in fact i rather dislike some of them), but i know it’s going to be a fun fucking show and a good fucking day. people need to relax and have some fun on the hill.

guess what? of that $56000, only $40000 was allowed to go to artists. so stop complaining wesleyan, or demand the SBC gives social committee more money next year. they did their best.

I’m real thankful to come from a musical background where the GZA is given more traction than the Roots and The Hold Steady is at least as well known as Jimmy Eat World. (and who the fuck is Sean Kingston?)(also, I totally skipped over the “not” in “not homogeneous” and spent a couple of minutes trying to come up with a way to make sense of that statement. Guess that’s why you’re not supposed to use indirect sentences in newspapers).

re: “‘Sweetness’ was at least decent…”thanks to the link you posted, I can now last.fm stalk you and see that you just listened to dashboard confessional, so you lose some emo mocking cred.but don’t worry, you have my vote for having weakerthans at the top of your chart.

i would take the roots over all of our acts any day, they appeal to mass groups of people and are a fun live show, great for a spring fling atmosphere…though jimmy eat world is a funny choice.
