Thomas L. Friedman Pied by Brown Radical

Week-old news, but at an Earth Day lecture at Brown, NYTimes globalization-happy Op-Ed columnist Thomas L. Friedman was pied in the face by what turned out to be radical leftist students with an agenda:

What a trooper!

Margaree Little, the offending pie artist, said she “wanted to open up a dialogue about what it really means to have free speech on an elite college campus like Brown”:

She said they considered passing out fliers or preparing questions to ask Friedman during a question-and-answer session, but ultimately decided to take a more significant step.

“I think it was successful in that those conversations are happening now in a pretty engaged way,” she said.

And how!

i was embarrassed to be a college student just watching that video. yeah maybe friedman is an asshole but the fucktards who thought they were making a statement by throwing a pie at him only made me laugh at their amateur publicity stunt.

There are plenty of ways to take someone down a notch if you don’t like their politics. I would guess that if you got into Brown, you might be able to come up with one a little more creative than a pie in the face. A disruptive stunt like that only makes more work for the lecture hall staff, and does nothing to enhance the level of the debate. What’s Friedman supposed to do now? Change his talk to address pie-throwing?

LOL at self righteous, attention whoring liberal activist college students. hopefully brown will put suspend her for a semester or something, though that’s pretty doubtful, since the administration is probably filled with more dumbass libtards than the student body.

I think this is hilarious, for one thing. who cares if it’s childish? childishness is honest, funny, and effective. Should she have protested outside so everyone could ignore them, or politely asked a question during Q&A? Bureaucratic activism = passivity.

If the people who did this actually just thought they were being kind of dicks and a little bit funny, that’s one thing. But “open up a dialogue” has become entitled-college-kid speak for “get attention” and I’m sick of it. Political action involves saying something, and if the students honestly though that throwing a pie was more intelligent and helpful then putting up fliers or asking questions, then they’re deluding themselves. If you’re going to be dick in college then put on your beer hat and light up that bong and go about your business. But don’t pull some kind of sophomoric stunt and then have the audacity to act like you deserve a nobel fucking peace prize for it.

they didn’t blow the guy up – they hit him with a pie. silly men like tom friedman should be deprived of dignity. it’s not political, it’s just taking a puffed up manchild down a peg or two.

The right to swing my fist ends where the other man’s nose begins. This is not “about what it really means to have free speech on an elite college campus like Brown.” This is the antithesis of free speech. As far as who the asshole in this story is – is it the guy taking his time to talk in front of students who are there to hear what he has to say, or the one throwing pies at him?

Wow, how embarrassing. I’m so glad that wasn’t Wesleyan. I consider myself pretty liberal and very supportive of activism, but I believe that was childish and rude.

I think it’s awesome.Thomas Friedman deserves to be deprived of his dignity. Silly to come up with an intellectual reason to hit an asshole in the face with a pie.
