Attendance & Security at Commencement

Sorry for another post that only says “we don’t have any information yet, sorz” but… we don’t.

In past years, when the weather has been nice enough to hold commencement outside, attendance has been open. Mostly because usually no one really wants to go other than relatives of graduating seniors. But with Obama coming to speak, clearly expected attendance might shift this year.

According to David Pesci, there is “no definitive word on whether there will be changes regarding attendance and security. We will be meeting with a variety of people regarding security for Senator Obama in the next 12-24 hours. Once a definitive determination has been made, we will most likely be posting that information to the homepage.”

So… refreshing the Wesleyan homepage seems like the way to go! Tomorrow, at least, that is.

(also, my very unofficial guess is that there will be no problems with at the very least, Wes students, alums, and ’08 relatives attending).

Note (Justin, 2:38 AM): Though it’s just speculation on my part, it seems likely that attendance may be relatively limited, since the University plans to limit members of the press at the event… perhaps signaling that they don’t want this to turn into a national spectacle-type event. From the Reunion and Commencement site:

Wesleyan University is handling regional media logistics for this event. A limited number of regional media will be permitted to cover the event. Regional media should contact David Pesci for credentialing information. National media will be limited to those traveling with Senator Obama’s press pool and should contact the appropriate media representative at the Senator’s press office.

From http://www.wesleyan.edu/newsrel/announcements/commencement_information.html“Commencement InformationBecause of the appearance of Senator Obama at this year’s Commencement the event will be ticketed and there will be limited seating.Graduates will receive a limited number of tickets for their families, and will receive first preference on seating.Because of the high amount of traffic that is anticipated, there will be no guarantee of any parking availability for this event. We ask the general public to respect the ceremony, our graduates and their families during this event.”It’s not really going to work, but it should help things a bit.

Seniors and graduating MAs/PhDs, etc. Didn’t mean to overlook the grad students!

They will be giving tickets for seats on Andrus to seniors to give out to whomever they want, other than that you can try getting a spot on Foss Hill by showing up early. Traffic is going to be absolutely insane so if you’re not already here by Saturday night, the traffic might keep you out. Emails will be going out shortly to this effect explaining the details of how/when to get your tickets, etc.

as a rising junior who has friends graduating, I also echo this sentiment. a Wes ID showing student, staff, or faculty should let you in, as common sense would dictate. who knows what the secret service will decide…

I agree. I’m also a Wes staff member and would like to see a few close friends graduate as well. Anyone with a WesID that shows staff/faculty should be allowed in. It will be interesting to see how they regulate who is allowed in or not.

I’m hoping that anyone with a Wes ID can get it b/c it would be unfortunate to exclude people like staff from the wes community who have friends graduating just because of Obama. I have been looking forward to seeing one of my good friends graduate for week and it would be horrible to all of a sudden be excluded from this as a staff member.

The mysterious quote machine himself David Pesci actually appeared on Channel 3 last night. I actually thought he was rather good. It’s kind of cool Wesleyan has people like this.

as a junior who has stayed (and worked) during senior week, I would be very annoyed if I was not allowed at commencement, particularly when this politician (who I love) is speaking at the school that I attend. Please don’t exclude me.love.

obviously they don’t want this to become anational event, but they cannot control foss hill – it is an open space. an event that would otherwise be planned in months is being planned in days. as a result, it’s going to be pretty hectic. but they can’t prevent people from the outskirts of andrus from watching and attending

For sure. This is far from a political campaign speech; it’s an honoring-graduating-seniors speech.

I think that people should remember that this event is primarily a commencement ceremony, and that people that are there for that purpose should be given preference for attendance.
