WES WE MOTHERFUCKING CAN

BARACK OBAMA TO SPEAK AT COMMENCEMENT

NYTimes has an article about it already:

“Ted and I talked about me filling in for him at Wesleyan University earlier this week,” Mr. Obama said in a statement. “Considering what he’s done for me and for our country, there’s nothing I wouldn’t do for him. So I’m looking forward to standing in his place on Sunday even though I know I won’t be able to fill his shoes.”

EDIT: President Roth confirms via email:

It gives me great pleasure to announce that on Sunday, May 25, 2008, United States Senator Barack Obama will deliver the Commencement Address at the 176th Commencement Ceremony at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut.

Senator Obama is honored to speak on behalf of United States Senator Edward M. Kennedy, who was previously scheduled to deliver the address.

This is a nothing more than a shameful attempt by Obama to woo the prized Methodist vote.

To those asking questions about whether they’re allowed to come to commencement: The answer is that they don’t know yet. Apparently there is a meeting going on right now to decide just that – how attendance will be regulated. As soon as we (wesleying) find out anything, we’ll update you :)

To the frosh who lives near campus: You should DEFINITELY go. Sit on the hill. Eat free sandwiches. This is totally a once-in-a-lifetime thing. Also, SO jealous of the class of ’08. -’06

4:00/4:12~ i doubt this is meant to broaden his support; if it is, it hardly matters who he’s talking to (short of neo-nazis or what have you), as his primary action is filling in for ted not campaigning to some target demographic. Any support it fosters will be nationwide(not on wes campus alone or even just among people who care about wesleyan/liberal arts schools) by showing he is caring/a good friend etc.

4:00 here again. I’m apparently a total downer. But this doesn’t seem like the smartest move on his part – he’s trying to broaden his supporte away from upper-middle-class educated liberals…by speaking at Wesleyan?

On behalf of all recent alums who have watched a bunch of random academics give the commencement speech… “Fuck you guys.”But seriously. Enjoy it. For once, everyone will pay attention to the commencement speech. And does this mean he’ll wear a crazy robe?!?
