It Was a Joke, Not a Gaffe

I don’t know why, but I was bothered enough by the attempts to paint Senator Barack Obama as being too stupid to pronounce the name of the school he was speaking at (previously reported here) to throw together a video demonstrating how it was obviously a joke.

The screenshot of the May 22 Wesleying post may be difficult to read, even at full screen. See this link to read it in your browser.

It would have been a much better video if I could have included the footage from Fox News, but it has since been taken offline.

I agree that it was pretty clear it was a joke. :)Steadyjohn: I think it was a good idea to delete it from the “official video,” which is viewed by plenty of people outside of the Wesleyan community who wouldn’t get it. However, I thought it was pretty funny and showed he’d done at least a little research (or heard Fox’s incorrect info)

At least it was not as bad as the screw ups the student president made. Is that how you speak after a four year degree. I need a refund. I was completely embarassed listening to her talk. Does anyone else feel this way. I mean this is supposed to be a prestigious school and she could not even string five words in a row together that were pronounced correctly.

Media credentials were limited, but the university was kind (and smart) enough to reserve space for Wesleying and the Wesleyan Argus, two student run publications.I attended and filmed with the credential reserved for Wesleying.

you guys really are stupid. it was clearly a joke, and you should shut the hell up if you think otherwise, because you are wrong. there is no question about it. there IS no debate.

Also the Obama campaign made sure to delete the “moment” from the official video on You Tube. A “huge grin” can mean lots of things!

there’s a method of comedic delivery called deadpan, in which the comic does not smile or change facial expression at all with the delivery of a joke. it’s effective with subtle or sarcastic humor because… it makes the delivery more subtle or sarcastic! (note the elipsis and the exclamation point: if you could deadpan jokes in writing, this would not be an example.) the only downside is that old people (and dull-witted people, which i thought included the folks at fox news, and not wes students as well…) tend to miss the joke. he smiled AFTER because when you say something funny and people laugh, it’s hard not to laugh too. hope this clears things up for those of you who’ve lost some probably much needed sleep over it.

Wait, he grinned after the comment? That is kind of weird. Because, you know, usually I actually laugh uncontrollably starting from the moment I decide to tell a joke, and stop immediately after it has been said. Barack was obviously covering up for something. Jesus Christ, are we still talking about this?

Just curious SpazeBoy – I read that media credentials were very hard to get for this event. Did you score one and if so, how?

There have several incidents reported in the press where he mispronounced or just plain messed up the name of the town he was visiting. Just last week he was in Sunrise Florida and he said he was in “Sunshine”. It happens even to the most “astute political operatives”. What’s surprising is that it doesn’t happen more often, considering how many appearances he makes each day and how tired he is.I agree that it’s not obvious it was a joke. He only smiles after everyone laughs. And despite all the people saying the name before him, a lot of people just have a hard time pronouncing the word. It wouldn’t surprise me if it was a really gaffe.

Well, he certainly did everything wrong if he wanted to make it clear to outsiders that this was a Wesleyan inside joke. That being said, it’s impossible that it was a straight up gaffe, given the word “Wesleyan” was repeated dozens of times by speakers before him and was printed on large banners and signs all over campus.

You have failed at convincing me… when I first heard it, it seemed clearly a gaffe. Now…well, I’m not sure. It seems that he grins after the crowd laughs, but on the other hand, you’d like to think that he is an astute political operator, and not one to accidentally screw up the name of the university at which he is speaking. If that’s true, of course, it means that he has zero ability to deliver jokes… Sort of a double-bind for Obama lovers, me included.
