Congratulations ‘In the Heights’!

Wesleyan-alum-fueled musical ‘In the Heights’ just won the Tony for Best Musical!

[edit]

Theatrical mastermind Lin-Manuel Miranda ’02 (above) is really excited about it. The show was one of the biggest winners of the night, for choreography, score, and orchestration as well as best musical.

Miranda leads the cast of the show in a performance at the ceremony:

11:59: In the Heights used the melody from an old reggae song that a lot of hip hop artists (Black star, Biggie Smalls, etc) have used to perform the lyrics to their songs. It’s sort of a cultural legacy thing.

I, personally, am thankful for the Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne fame for making it virtually impossible for future employers to ever google my name.

Can we note that he RAPPED his acceptance speech and that it was absolutely wonderful? I don’t think the Tonys quite knew what hit them.

this is so exciting! I had never seen any performances from the show until the Tonys tonight. I noticed the song used parts from “definition” by black star. How does stuff like that work? Do they have to get permission from the original musicians? Just wondering. Anyway the song was really entertaining. Very impressive.
