Was Barack Obama ever a Muslim?

Today’s New York Times is running an article called “Ready to Attack Obama, if Some Money Arrives,” which chronicles the difficulty some conservative groups are having in raising funds to fight Obama’s campaign.

The article led me to an anti-Obama site called Expose Obama that is trying to raise enough money to put this ad on national TV:

Question: was Barack Obama ever a Muslim?

He says no. But the Associated Press found records that show Obama was enrolled in school as a Muslim while living in Indonesia. And Obama’s campaign said it couldn’t explain why.

Maybe it doesn’t matter if Obama were a Muslim back then. But it does matter if he is not telling the truth about it now.

Oh, politics. Will this be Swift Boat Veterans for Truth 2.0?

@5:11 I don’t think someone who just reads the title would assume the title was a joke. Considering wesleying is posting it, if I read just the title, I would assume the post was about a methodical examination of obama’s background.Justin, you are spreading their smear campaign, and while wesleyan is 99% obama, we don’t need more of this shit on the internet. You should post a warning in the title and make the post more clear that this is an attack ad and not based on anything scientific.-6:22

the title for the post is no incendiary, its tenor is obvious, it’s mocking the very idea. Don’t attack your own side.

The fact that they want to get this on TV doesn’t make it any more likely to get on TV, and you shouldn’t treat it as such. In fact there is no chance this will ever hit TV, and all you are doing by posting it is legitimizing their bigotry, and giving them the free publicity that they are seeking to buy.

Justin, why don’t you just post a title which is exactly a summary of the article you write, nothing more, nothing less. For instance here: “Possible TV ad: Obama was a Muslim”.–6:31

@6:22: Agreed. The thing that kills me is that you don’t do shit like this by mistake. You’re purposely doing it to make your posts more attention grabbing which, by the way, doesn’t make them better.

Justin, perhaps a less sensational title? This one is incendiary, even if the blog post itself isn’t.Do Democrats cause cancer? Find out at foxnews.com.

Sadly, Anonymous 1, I agree. Religion is the last great prejudice for the simple reason that religions are zero-tolerance as our their God(s).Justin. I didn’t state, not accuse you of making attacks. The point remains though that perpetuating an attack of falsity by “making the community aware” is no less the cause for prejudice than the prejudicial attacks themselves.

Oh, Sphynx-y. Let’s not make assumptions about my opinion of Obama’s religion. For the record, I could care less about it.I think there’s a great distinction between making the community aware of these political attacks, and making those attacks myself… but it seems as though you think otherwise. Awesome.

Sphynix: I’m fully convinced we will get both a black president and a woman president, probably a number of both, before we get a president who isn’t Christian.

He IS telling the truth about it. Would you consider yourself an ex-muslim if you found that your mother had enrolled you into your elementary school and checked the ‘muslim’ box on the enrollment sheet? But it’s all pointless. People like this, and you, make it seem like it’s bad to be a muslim. It’s no worse than having been a christian. Treating muslim as a bad word is the worst thing this year’s campaign has done to the world. It’s time people just stopped talking about it, or, start researching what religion ALL the candidates were at every age in their lives. The fact that the only candidate having his religious past researched is someone who is being accused of having been a muslim is the worst thing I’ve ever seen in a campaign, ever. It’s one of the main reasons I decided to vote for Obama, and honestly, right now I wish he had been, or is a Muslim. Seems that’s a bigger ‘change’ to America than his skin color.
