Foss Cross Lives!…

…sort of. It’s been re-branded “Bend it at Beckham”–presumably because the event is now held in Fayerweather and not Mocon–but the essence remains the same. From the New Student Orientation schedule:

“It’s gender bending time! At Wes we are aware that gender can be expressed in a variety of ways, and one way it is expressed is through dress. So exchange clothes with your hall mates and challenge what gender is or should be. Pencil a moustache, don a wig, be as creative as you want, and come prepared to bend the gender binary in fun and fashion!”

(For a refresher on the debate surrounding the event last spring, see here.)

agreed 4:14, 4:51, and especially 9:03.Keep calling it Foss Cross and it will contine to be Foss Cross, the official name doesn’t matter, just like Zonker Harris Day will always be that no matter what PC name is slapped on it. -An alum

Agreed, straight dude 4:14. I’m gay and had no problem with Foss Cross, it was great. I doubt many others did either. This new name probably won’t change much, but if the LGBT people responsible for this want the attitude of the event to shift to “fuck the binary and be aware of its negative effects on society” from “let’s dress in drag and have a dance party”, that’s lame.

the problem is its too on the nose. foss cross is obv playing with gender, but saying ‘lets play with gender’ is a bit like ‘lets put our genitals together!’ or ‘lets see if we can fall in love!’ or just overexplaining a joke.

i dunno, as a straight dude, going to a cross dressing event seems pretty normal but a ‘gender bending’ thing just seems less exciting. it just seems less party-y. its just not as taboo-y this way, its more corny. i dont know. i feel like the lgbt activists who were pushing this issue were sorta being crybabies.

They didn’t change the name because it was moved from Mocon, because it was still Foss Cross when it was in the Westco Cafe. They changed it because some people in the LGBTQQetc. community found the name offensive, from what I understand.~’09
