…they go and hire illegal workers!
For Google no Less!
Or so says this post on Valleywag. Here’s the snippet that’s tangentially related to our lives as Wesleyan students:
One of our sources with Google’s ready-to-boil kitchens, whom we’ve nicknamed “Deep Fried,” tells us that the employee-coddling search giant has a much bigger food problem than cutbacks on dinner — and a much bigger labor problem than a lack of work visas for its programmers. More than half of the contract workers who prepare and serve Googler’s vast quantities of free food, our source claims, lack documentation that proves they have a legal right to live and work in the United States. Are they illegal aliens? The point is that Bon Appétit, the management company which runs Google’s cafes, has turned a blind eye — as has Google, until recently. A former chef tells us Google would frequently let workers who didn’t have proper credentials return to work with fresh documents, under new names.
Oh, and one of the commenters a few posts down said they got rid of the Summerfields Salad Bar, so there’s that to complain about too. [edit: apparently not]
I know Wesleyan doesn’t care, but man I wouldn’t have come here if Bon Appetit had already been hired. I hate all their shit.

@11:04 – Summerfields isn’t open yet, right? I believe the comment from the earlier post was that the Salad Bar (and drinks, and desserts) is no longer unlimited.

yeah i mean this post does take a one sided and not very charitable view of illegal immigration, but I don’t think that was the poster’s point. And unfortunately, either Google or BA were legally in the wrong in this situation. That said, I agree with the sentiment that illegal immigration is not inherently a bad thing and is more of a symptom of a problem than a problem in and of itself. Also, hiring illegal immigrants can be seen as an act of charity as well as one of exploitation, and offers risks to both employers and employees.

Right, because a company doing illegal things is totally okay as long as you disagree with the law, and anybody who says differently hates immigrants. Good logic.
