Turn Off Your Fucking Television

Ed Quish ’09 writes in to tell us:

So our previously underground reading group is trying to spread like quack grass (rhizomatic weed) this year and get as many of us as we can to come together Wednesday nights to read, watch, listen to, discuss, and circulate what we think is important. The idea is that every week someone from the group comes up with something manageable to present, we send information about it to our listserv, those who are interested stop by, and we learn from each other. We try to look at things that we don’t get a chance to delve into in classes, but we also have no rules, so use it as you will. Examples from the past include multiple forays into contemporary marxism and social theory more generally (including a documentary about Antonio Negri), the book of ecclesiastes, essays on language, and for next week part 4 from Vladimir Nabokov’s “Ada or Ardor: A Family Chronicle.”

And the past is over — bring us anything you like. If you’re interested in hearing from us or have a question e-mail ed.quish@gmail.com, and if you want we’ll put you on the list.

— the reading group

When: 9:30 Wednesdays
Where: German House 135 High

*A bit of editorial: for some reason, I’ve been receiving their emails and this seems like a really cool, active group. I have found that it is easy for reading to become a chore in college, and with so much reading for class, nevermind all the other cool shit Wes students do, it can be difficult to find time to read for fun. And that’s a real shame.
