Sarah Palin: an earmark unto herself

John McCain talks a lot about his zeal for cutting earmarks. But, could his running mate be an earmark unto herself?

As governor of Seward’s Icebox Alaska, Sarah Palin not only billed the state to live in her own house, she also “charged the state for her children to travel with her, including to events where they were not invited, and later amended expense reports to specify that they were on official business,” reports the Associated Press.

The charges included costs for hotel and commercial flights for three daughters to join Palin to watch their father in a snowmobile race, and a trip to New York, where the governor attended a five-hour conference and stayed with 17-year-old Bristol for five days and four nights in a luxury hotel.

As if treating her kids to a week at the Ritz—while they watched daddy race a snowmobile—wasn’t enough, the spending blitz continues; this time, on the RNC’s dime.

Politico reported yesterday that the Republican National Committee has funded Palin’s haute couture since she appeared as numero dos on the Republican ticket. While it’s definitely made her the sexiest vice presidential candidate that I’ve ever seen, it sure has sapped some cash from the RNC’s campaign funds:

The Republican National Committee appears to have spent more than $150,000 to clothe and accessorize vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and her family since her surprise pick by John McCain in late August.

According to financial disclosure records, the accessorizing began in early September and included bills from Saks Fifth Avenue in St. Louis and New York for a combined $49,425.74.

The records also document a couple of big-time shopping trips to Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis, including one $75,062.63 spree in early September.

The RNC also spent $4,716.49 on hair and makeup through September after reporting no such costs in August.

If John Edwards’ $400 haircuts were excessive, and McCain’s $520 leather shoes were over the top, how does $150,000 fit in? McCain prides himself on cutting wasteful spending… maybe he should take a look at the $49,425.74 outfit on the woman campaigning at his side.

Good lord, what is this, December 2000? Claire’s right: voting may be a moral and ethical decision, but you can’t ignore the strategic aspects. Voters (including myself) who are partial towards the Green party or pissed off by the Democrats, but are serious about the issues, should vote Democratic in swing states and Green elsewhere. Yeah, it sucks, and Obama’s not a progressive in some infuriating ways, but that’s just how the country works right now.A nice middle ground for New York voters is the Working Families party, a progressive party that has endorsed and fused its votes with Obama. So, a vote for like “E” on the ballot means a vote for Obama but NOT a vote for the democratic party. Everyone wins!

I like how third-party votes supposedly “don’t matter”. Unless you’re in a swing-district in a swing-state, your dem/repub vote won’t change a thing. Meanwhile, a third-party vote increases the percentage of voters who voted for that party’s candidate, potentially giving them a seat at next election’s debates. On the other hand, if you’re in a swing-whatever, your vote definitely matters, and I’d appreciate it if you voted Obama.

Public financing of elections was instituted in order to ensure that special interests could not get a controlling interest in a candidate. Obama has built his war chest out of millions of small donations rather than a smaller number of large ones. He may not have taken public financing for his campaign, but he’s still being financed by the general public.

Obama has sold out since getting the nomination. Iraq, the telcom bill, campaign finance reform, off shore drilling. What next, expand Gitmo? He’s has become such a disappointment to me – anything in the name of political expediency. That’s not leadership. That’s Washington Politics as usual. He’s just another fraud. I am voting Green Party.

Meanwhile Man-of the-People Obama has spent nearly $450 million in trying to win the presidency after lying about campaign finance reform. Wonder which special interests he’s sold out to, besides the telcom and drug companies, which were always big boosters. Disgusting.

Old news, actually. And the chrage-backs to the state were legal and actually put in place by the former democratic governor.

I don’t recall Caribou Barbie’s accessories costing quite so much… But I do love that $150,000 later she can tell us about how she’s just a hockey mom, in touch with “real folks,” because clearly spending several times the avg yearly income on trying to look pretty makes her more in touch with avg Americans.
