Nics master key returned!

Breaking news! It seems that the Nics master key has been returned!

Micah Feiring gives us the scoop:

Dear Students,

The Nicolson Master key was anonymously returned to the WSA! I would like to thank whoever “borrowed” the key for having the decency to do the right thing. Taking the Key for shits and giggles was a d-bag move but bringing it back required courage. The WSA will work with ResLife to ensure that the keys are more secure in the future. Fortunately, nothing was taken from any of the dorms. Because more than half of the locks were changed already, the university has decided to finish the switch (Sry Nics Residents, YOU STILL HAVE TO PICK UP YOUR KEYS). However, as the key was returned, the Nics locks will be recycled to replace the older cylinders currently used in a certain “undisclosed” dorm. I can’t express how relieved I am that the situation was resolved. Thank you anonymous (Wes really appreciates it).

Best wishes,

Micah Feiring

Student Affairs, WSA

You heard it here first, dear readers! The dispicable, larcenous, key-crook has changed his ways and rescinded hir claim on the ill-gotten master key. Nics residents can rest easy toninght, knowing that, perhaps, somewhere, there is a shred of morality in this depraved world.

Can’t anyone just copy a master key? Why would ResLife assume that the old Nic cylinders are secure? And why would the WSA advertise that they were doing this?

That is correct. Before the master key was returned, the Nics cylinders could not have been reused to replace older cylinders in other dorms. Hence, the university will not have to pay another $50,000 to buy new locks in the future.

Sam: exactly. Also, it’s entirely possible that they may end up using major maintenance funds for this, since a rekeying was going to occur one way or the other, in which case it’s money that would have been spent anyway just being spent a little earlier.

8:47: From what I understand, it’s a non-trivial expense now that would have been necessary some time in the near future anyway. So in the end it won’t end up costing much extra money I don’t think.

Since the lock change is still happening, isn’t this still a nontrivial expense to the University?

Was I the only one that was offended by this? I really don’t think our representatives should be acting all official and still saying things like “shits and giggles”

@4:35: there are still four dorms on campus (the butts and hi-rise…plus 156 high, which no one cares about anyway) that haven’t been rekeyed yet and are presumably on the list in the near future. i highly doubt that’s the motivation behind deciding to change the locks anyway, but the other buildings were going to get rekeyed one way or another, so it’s just a more roundabout route.

Dear Anonymous (2:56),I am sorry you feel “inconvenienced because of someone’s selfish act.” As a Class Rep, and member of the ResLife committee, its my job to make your life more “convenient” and fix problems. I’m really hurt you would imply that I was the one responsible for taking the key. I don’t think you know me so I would ask that you not make these kinds of accusations. If you want to talk about the situation, or the fact that you have been “inconvenienced,” please call me @ 609 577 6717 and I would be happy to talk with you.Best,Micah

Public forums; such a great place to make somebody feel like more of an asshole for doing something that makes them less of an asshole.

2:56–I don’t think Micah was the one to find it…He’s just the rep working on this particular problem, so he’s the one keeping us updated on it.

seems a little suspicious that Micah asked for the key and then is the one to find it…I’m still upset that we’ve been inconvenienced because of someone’s sefish act…
