Scott Varnado ’09 is holding auditions for his film, “The Free State of Jones.” He writes:
The film is a Civil War Era action/drama that will be filmed entirely outdoors with natural lighting. The story revolves around a band of Confederate outlaws in the Deep South, who, during the Civil War, actually fought their own Confederate neighbors rather than join the Southern cause and fight in the Civil War. Basically, they were total badasses. Because the Film Department has been generous enough to allow me to film in the Spring Semester, we will have most of the equipment at our disposal and lots of leeway in terms of shooting schedules. This is going to be a whole lot of fun to film and will be valuable film experience for those of you looking to act onscreen.
Auditions will be held:
Date: Wednesday, April 1
Time: 6:00-8:00 PM
Place: East Room of the Theater Building in the CFA. (Room 114)
Specific roles seeking to be cast:
Newt Knight, MALE, the young but wise leader of the band of outlaws. The protagonist, Newt is a pacifist and the idealistic leader of the Knight Company.
Rachel Knight, FEMALE, Newt’s wife and better half, Rachel attempts to defend the band of outlaws by any means necessary–including violence.
EXTRAS of any age/ethnicity to play the members of the Knight Company, a totally badass band of Confederate deserters who have formed their own society deep in the pine forests of Mississippi.
The film is set to shoot on April 10,11; 17,18; and 24,25.
For the audition, you can bring a pre-prepared short monologue (under three minutes) OR read cold from the screenplay.
