Get used to it students - many more staff cuts coming all over campus. They are not calling it a lay off, but a "voluntary separation package". They aren't re-hiring for those taking the package. You will all be affected.

Newsflash: Wesleyan has been silently cutting staff hours and eliminating jobs. I guess we're lucky to have a mailroom with workers at this point.

The hours are frustrating. The staff are generally okay. The student workers - some are nice, one of you is a tool.

PACKAGE NOTIFICATIONS DRIVE ME NUTS! I do a lot of online shopping, and go to the mailroom most days. I don't trust the package notifications because they are all late or (more than once) send me to the wrong room. Often I get the package notification after I've already picked up my package, leading me to think another package has arrived. I wait in line for the obligatory half an hour, get bitched at by Tool Kid and then there's no package...except for the one that arrived last week and for which I haven't gotten a notification email. This has happened 3 times so far.

Question to staff: Why is it impossible to look me up on the computer and tell me how many packages I have? All I want to do is minimize the amount of time we both waste when I have to come back every day.

As a new employee of Wesstation, I can definitely see the behind-the-scenes chaos. It feels like we are buried beneath a mountain of boxes, and as soon as we sort them out, another mountain comes in. It's rather overwhelming to keep up with.

We are trying the best we can to make your experience as pain-free as possible. Please don't be angry with us when we ask you the location of the package. It's very stressful and difficult to locate one box or envelope out of the 50 that share your last name's letter. Giving us a bad attitude doesn't make it any easier to find your package.

The student workers feel really awful that this situation is like it is, so please don't take it out on us. I HATE asking someone to go back and check their email, but that is what our supervisors tell us to do.

For now, just write down your location and package type and put on a smile when you get to the window, until the WSA can help us figure out this situation.

"There were two students working at the window, and there was one student waiting in line behind me. I had forgotten which location my package was in, and the student who was ‘helping’ me refused to look it up, telling me I had to go and do so myself."

I'd have to side with the mail room on that one. The package email clearly states to write down the type and location; it only worsens the slow service if they're constantly looking up everyone's package locations.

I'm actually pretty sure seniors can't receive mail or packages at their woodframes (based on tests my roomates and I have done). This seems very silly to me, and changing it would definitely ease WesStation traffic.

In fairness to the mailroom employees, the sudden relative influx in slowness must be part of the reason for the bad attitudes some of them have. Still, being treated with disrespect and (weirdly) suspicion after having waited in line for half an hour is not fun or fair.

there's a whole tracking system that requires imput at a terminal. pressing the send button is the least of it.

whatever happened to just putting a sticker on your mailbox door? Seems simpler and less time consuming than sitting down at a computer terminal every time a student receives a package.

Yeah, the whole having to know exactly where your package is thing is kind of bullshit. More bullshit is being unceremoniously turned away when the clock hits 4:28pm, without having even been given a warning during your entire and unsuccessful half-hour wait in line. Even so, I can cope with those.

What is simply inexcusable is finding out from your tracking number that your package has been delivered a week ago, never receiving an email for it (the emails I get from them are sporadic, often coming only after I've picked up a package, so you never know which email relates to what...), having them look it up by the tracking number, being told its not there, then spending near hours on the phone with customer service TRYING to get refunded for what was apparently a package lost in the mail...and then getting an email from Wesstation 3 days later. They've got it. Go at 4:15. Can't get it.

The insult upon injury upon kicking you when you're down is a bit much.

Whoo. Got that off my chest.

Oooh, mail room horror stories. Too many of these to count. In general, I've never had a positive interaction with an adult staff member of the mailroom that went beyond me buying stamps or sending a letter.

The students who work there aren't all good either (although most of them are great): I went to pick up a package a couple of days ago. There were two students working at the window, and there was one student waiting in line behind me. I had forgotten which location my package was in, and the student who was 'helping' me refused to look it up, telling me I had to go and do so myself.
