Life may not continue after death, but you’ll be comforted to know that Wesleyan keeps the guilt trips coming after you graduate. This slip came in the mail today from the Wesleyan Fund:
Text: “Wesleyan solicits approximately 24,000 alumni, parents, and friends via postal mail at least once each year. Many receive additional mailings. By making your gift early, you can help save resources and contribute to Wesleyan’s commitment to environmental sustainability. As an added incentive, the money saved on donor mailings can go where it counts: financial aid, teaching, and campus improvements.”
Layin’ it on thick, huh, Wesleyan Fund?

Every time the campus uses this intellectually dishonest guise of “sustainability” to compel people to do things the university wants them to do they are delegitimizing the actual issue they claim to care so much about.

Can we just quickly talk about the fact that the note that you’re talking about was in the envelope with the obnoxious letter…
ON ITS OWN PIECE OF PAPER.
This year’s donation: $0

I honestly don’t see that much bashing of giving back to Wesleyan, it’s mostly just some good-natured mocking of a particular campaign strategy that seems to amount to:
“You should give us money now because otherwise we’re just going to spend more resources begging you for money!”
I personally look forward to similar campaigns in the future.
“Every time we send out a mass email, we have to sacrifice a kitten to appease the dark SPAM gods. By contributing early, you can help reduce premature kitten death and increase world happiness as well as the arts at Wesleyan.”
“Wesleyan employs a bevy of children chained in a basement to type out these campaign letters. If you donate now, we’ll be able to free just one of these children from this task. Take this opportunity now to save the University costs and lower the horrible impact of child labor in this world.”
Etc, etc.

Don’t you get it? It costs Wesleyan $70,000 per year, per student, to cover all expenses for going to Wesleyan. Where do you think the extra $20k comes from? Where do you think the financial aid on top of that $20k comes from? It comes from donors. If you don’t want to give, that’s your decision, but don’t go around bashing the practice of giving back to Wes. Some of us actually care about making sure the school we went to is still around (and just as good) in 20 years.

I did my part by asking them to stop mailing me . . . and now I learn that all the money they saved from my action goes directly to financial aid, teaching and campus improvements! You’re welcome Wesleyan.
