Perform the National Anthem at Wesleyan Athletic Events

american flag

WesPep is starting a new initiative this year and would like for individual students and musical groups to perform the National Anthem at various athletic events.

We want this to serve as a way to promote school spirit as well as the talented students on this campus.

If you think you are interested in showing off your skills at one of the various athletic events and having your friends cheer you on please contact AhDream Smith at afsmith@wesleyan.edu.

To #10: I truly hope you are joking about burning the flag at every athletic event from now on. If you aren’t joking then you are one of the many whiny little bastards that others have discussed. You must not have any friends fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan like I, and so many other people our age, do. I hope there aren’t any veterans in your family because they would be ashamed of you.

  3. missing the point?

The point isn’t to force the entire campus to support athletics or wesleyan if they don’t want to, it’s to create a way for people who want to support wes athletics to do it together. I don’t play a sport that’s easily watchable, but I can tell you it’d be nice to have people there supporting us if it were possible. Athletes put in a lot of time and hard work, but nobody is forcing school spirit on you. Get over yourselves.

You idiots posting comments make me ashamed to be at Wes.

Stop being such bitches. Support your fellow students, classmates, and peers; athletes or not.

For fucks sake, a bunch of whiny little bastards have taken over Wes it seems (at least the anonymous comments section)

if you actually chose Wes because of “no” athletic school spirit, you are a dumbass. If you aren’t athletic (no control over your own limbs/no eye hand coordination), that’s fine, but leave those who either have or appreciate it to their own. that said, Wes has some pretty good athletic teams. why dont you enjoy the weather and kick a soccer ball around? perhaps toss a frisbee?

this isn’t meant to be a personal attack- just in comment number 7 the commentator first hates on university in the way it is a social institution and then says that it is an undervalued commodity- perhaps to be fair u meant that the problem with the social instituion is that it protects wealth and reenforces certain class divides, but by saying it is an undervalued commodity it makes it seem like u wish ur degree were worth more and thus that would greaten the divide- not very clear

also sure some people who graduate will use their knowledge to exploit others but i think overall most people who leave here want to make the world better- knowledge is power and it can help give people the tools to help others

wes is not without faults and overall it is a pretty great place- sorry u are so unhappy here- just the way u write about it tho makes u seem like one of those entitled haters

in summary: GO WES!!!!! and props to WESPEP to expressing school cheer

laziness? my lack of school spirit comes from the fact that most people who go to this school are hateful entitled little shits and that the school itself is part of an ensemble of social institutions that make sure there will be plenty more entitled little shits to come and continue sending this planet down the toilet on everyone else’s behalf.
i’ll cheer on my friends because they’re my friends; just because your family and mine purchased the same over priced, undervalued commodity doesn’t mean i don’t fucking hate you. if anything, it makes it just a shred more likely.
also fuck the national anthem; as americans we should all be disgusted with ourselves.

it is NCAA regulation that the national anthem be played at every sporting event- if u have a problem with that take it up with them- furthermore lack of school spirit is just laziness- it doesn’t just have to be about the athletes but also u can cheer on ur wes peers at a myriad of events, like band competitions, performances, etc…. just events with a competitive edge often allow us something to gather around

    1. booo national anthem at sporting events
    2. booo athletics-based school spirit (not hating on athletes, just school spirit that is based on athletics more than other things)
    3. booo in general.

What is this obsession with the national anthem at every sporting event? We have a Wes-specific fight song for a reason.
