Hawk won. More documentation of yesterday’s squirrel-hungry hawk on the hunt, then sating the hunger. Intrepid photographer Yushi Ohmori ’11 snapped some excellent shots while the crowd watched outside WestCo.
It spots its prey:
Which did not stand a chance.
Hawk savors raw, gamy victory.
The hawk was already in the process of eating a gray squirrel, and was chilling and chewing on it in the tree for awhile when the bold black squirrel in the second photo went out to investigate. Luckily the fearsome predator was already sated, and our friend the black squirrel escaped unharmed.

The captions are inaccurate; I was present at the event and the hawk did not eat that black squirrel. The hawk already had caught a different squirrel and had already been sitting in the tree and eating it when that black squirrel decided to investigate. The black squirrel in the above picture escaped without a scratch. The squirrel being eaten was definitely gray.

Sad, the black squirrels are my favorite.

why is the squirrel running towards the hawk? was he the instigator of the attack, or just really stupid?

I hope it wasn’t! But it took place in Westco courtyard – don’t the black squirrels usually hang around Pi? Maybe that’s the only place I ever notice them.

Was the squirrel one of our rare black (alpha, soul) squirrels or is it just backlit?
