Our Day Will Come is based on Seamus Heaney’s The Burial at Thebes, the Irish playwright’s retelling of Sophocles’ Antigone. This project is the culmination of three months of field research exploring music and other genres in the construction of narrative oral tradition in the Irish neighborhoods of Chicago. Heaney’s play exemplifies the intersection of Greek drama and Irish oral tradition. In the afterward to the play Heaney writes, “Greek tragedy is as much musical score as it is dramatic script.” This premise has guided the exploration of Our Day Will Come. Performances are Dec 3, 8pm and Dec 4 and 5, 8pm and 10pm. Free admission (tickets available the day of the performance in the box office).
