Urgent: Phone Bank to Save Abortion Rights

From Zak Kirwood ’12:prochoice

Can you imagine an America where a woman can’t get an abortion? Well if you were born after 1973, like me, you can’t. But that could change very easily in the coming weeks.

The Stupak Amendment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stupak_amendment) was added to the House of Representatives version of the health care reform bill in Congress last month. It makes it impossible for ALL insurance coverage plans, public or private, from covering abortion. Whereas now over 80% of private plans cover abortion, under the new health care reform, close to 0% will. Abortion, which can cost up to $1,000, will have to be paid for out-of-pocket, which is impossible for many.

This week, Senators Ben Nelson and Orrin Hatch are planning to introduce an identical amendment to the Senate version of the health care reform bill. If that passes, abortion will be out of reach for millions of women in America.

WHAT CAN YOU DO? Planned Parenthood is sponsoring a national day of action tomorrow. I’ll be tabling in Usdan, showing people how to use a program called Activate, which allows us to get in touch with lots of people from all over the country to get them to contact their senators about protecting women’s health care. All you need is a cell phone and a laptop (or you can use one of the computers in Usdan).

So please, stop by for as long as you can tomorrow, anytime between 12 and 4 PM. This is an emergency situation for anyone concerned about women’s rights over their own body so we need all the help we can get!

Who: YOU and Planned Parenthood
What: Phonebank to save abortion rights
Where: Usdan Café
When: Tuesday, December 8th, 12-4 PM
Why: Because we can’t set back the clock 35 years for women’s rights!

Success! The senate amendment was voted down today and it will not be included in the senate version. It may still be included in the final version after the house and senate bills go to conference committee, but this is still a huge victory.

thanks to all who phonebanked today!!!

yael- but poster 12 is correct that it isnt the stupak ammendment that does this (stupak u could still get abortions paid from a private insurance plan that was specific for abortions- see the article from the argus wespeak)- it is actually nelson

I’m pretty sure the original post was correct, since in the health insurance bill, virtually all private insurance plans will receive government subsidy. So all people will health insurance will be receiving some form of government subsidy for their health care, and all women will have to pay out of pocket for abortions.Everyone is technically (federally) allowed to get an abortion, but i think they cost between 400-2000 dollars out of pocket.

the first post wasn’t correct- but the new Nelson Amendment says that women that recieve any gov funding (like the proposed health care plan or are on welfare) will not be allowed to get an abortion

The original post here wasn’t entirely accurate. The Stupak Amendment doesn’t affect all insurance plans, just those offered to people receiving government subsidies.

Basically, if you’re a rich woman, you can still get an abortion. But if you’re poor and receiving a government subsidy for your health insurance, you’ll have to buy abortion insurance or pay out of pocket.

This actually says alot about the politics of abortion. You can deny abortions to poor women who have less of a vocie in the political process, but allow rich women, who get a tax break on their health insurance, to still get abortions.

I do hope phone banks like this succeed in killing this terrible amendment.

READ A GREAT ARTICLE ON THIS-
the nelson amendment wants to prevent women who are on any gov funding (like welfare or someone on the proposed gov insurance plan) will NOT BE ALLOWED TO HAVE ABORTIONS (thus only extremely rich people will be able to afford them and they will be even harder to obtain) – do not stand by, this is bullshit
