Can you imagine an America where a woman can’t get an abortion? Well if you were born after 1973, like me, you can’t. But that could change very easily in the coming weeks.
The Stupak Amendment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stupak_amendment) was added to the House of Representatives version of the health care reform bill in Congress last month. It makes it impossible for ALL insurance coverage plans, public or private, from covering abortion. Whereas now over 80% of private plans cover abortion, under the new health care reform, close to 0% will. Abortion, which can cost up to $1,000, will have to be paid for out-of-pocket, which is impossible for many.
This week, Senators Ben Nelson and Orrin Hatch are planning to introduce an identical amendment to the Senate version of the health care reform bill. If that passes, abortion will be out of reach for millions of women in America.
WHAT CAN YOU DO? Planned Parenthood is sponsoring a national day of action tomorrow. I’ll be tabling in Usdan, showing people how to use a program called Activate, which allows us to get in touch with lots of people from all over the country to get them to contact their senators about protecting women’s health care. All you need is a cell phone and a laptop (or you can use one of the computers in Usdan).
So please, stop by for as long as you can tomorrow, anytime between 12 and 4 PM. This is an emergency situation for anyone concerned about women’s rights over their own body so we need all the help we can get!
