Tim Cronin, Camera Obscura’s trumpet player, emailed me this Smash Mouth vocal track. Make sure to listen at 1:36. Oh boy. Ben Weisgall ’10 insisted I post this.
I am. I actually wanted to show you all how great Smashmouth really is. You’ve laughed in my face for the last time. Expect no more unfunny pretentious Wesleying posts from me, I am off to drive my car off a bridge
but I’ll make a tape recording like the end of “Stan” by Eminem to keep my bad late 90’s/early 2000’s streak going. Irony rulez!

Sorry, I had no idea that Camera Obscura got so big (just checked p4k). They’ve played in my basement a few times so I thought I was being a punk by mentioning them… my fault.

Well he’s only a pretentious ass because he prefaced the whole post by saying he got the track from a member of a Noted Independent Rock Band. Other than that I guess we’re supposed to laugh at the fact that the dude from Smashmouth can’t sing. Woooooaaaaah.
Not a very punk rock sentiment though.

Context as far as I can surmise: Smash Mouth releases an isolated vocal track to individuals in the music industry in the hopes that people will take it and add music and remix it to make it listenable. Other artists do this from time to time, and sometimes it proves successful. In this case it merely proves Smash Mouth’s lead singer’s embarrassing inability to sing. I suppose that makes it comical to listen to? That’s my take on it, at least.
