From Daniel Mendelsohn ’11:
This semester there will be a student forum called “Our American Pastime”, where we will read a series of great baseball books that deal with important American social issues. We will, for example, see what the breaking of the color barrier in baseball can teach us about integration in larger American society. It will be worth a full credit, it will be pass/fail, and we will meet once a week in the evening.
We will be reading biographies on Jackie Robinson, Roberto Clemente, as well as October 1964 by David Halberstam, Moneyball by Michael Lewis, Ball Four by Jim Bouton. We will watch A League of Their Own, Eight Men Out, and Field of Dreams.
