1. In case you’ve been sleeping under a snowdrift all day, (or out frolicking and sledding down Foss with shrieking children, in which case I applaud/envy you) Google is kind of gently subsuming Twitter (and Flickr, and and and) under its hyper-easy, non-character-limited, locationally-aware Buzz… Thing. It’s like Pokemon out there, gotta catch all the follower/ees you can –>Log into conventional GMail. If nothing shows up, here’s a shortcut to cut the line. No word on how this will/might work for Google Apps people. (I.E. our wesleyan email addresses. Consolidation could be messy.) If you frequently email Osama Bin Laden, be extra careful during the setup process as your most frequently emailed contacts are made public by default as the people you are following (provided they have public profiles.) They’re also going to provide heavily subsidized fibre-to-the-home for anywhere between 50 and 500 thousand Americans. And free, doubly-obscured monetization models hidden in ponies made out of chocolate.
2. Facebook has opened (FINALLY) the XMPP/jabber gateway to Facebook Chat. In laymans’ terms, you can now use Facbeook chat from Adium, Pigdin or virtually any modern IM client. (and possibly from google talk, though I’m still dicking around with that.) Instructions on how to configure most things are here.
3. Ever have problems drunk-emailing people? There’s a google labs product called “Mail Goggles” that tries to prevent you from embarrassing yourself while dosed to the gills with your emetic of choice. In gmail, click settings, then labs, then scroll down to “Mail Goggles” and hit enable.
(WTF google. Orkut vs. Wave vs. Buzz? vs. Facebook vs. EtherPad vs. Twitter?)
