Wes wrestlers Dan Bloom 10 (photo inset upper right) and Greg Hurd 10 (main photo) are New England champions at 125 and 174 pounds, respectively, after placing first in their weight class at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Championships this weekend. Both will head to the NCAA Championships for the second straight year, as Bloom was the New England champion at 125 last year as well while Hurd was a wild-card selection after placing second. Josh Berkovic 10 placed second at 165 for the second straight year, and Luke Erickson 12 (third at 197), Howard Tobochnik 13 (fifth at 141), Zach Rolfe 10 (fifth at 184), and Dave Bachy 10 (sixth at 157) were all named all-New England by virtue of their top-six finishes.
Wes tied for third at the meet with Johnson & Wales (95 team points each), behind only Williams (128.5 team points) and Springfield (100.5 team points). Also, 12th-year head coach/lifesaver and all-around awesome guy Drew Black (photo inset lower right) was named NEWA Coach of the Year, and Wes was recognized for having the highest team GPA of the 14 NEWA schools.
The NCAAs are March 5-6 at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Keep it up, guys!
