Psst . . .

MGMT is streaming the entire new album now on its site. Thanks to Braille for the tip.

There are some sweet moments on this record, much more in tune with Oracular Spectacular‘s spacey latter half than “Kids” or “Time To Pretend” (and far more cohesive than “Flash Delirium” might have you believe). Dig the doo-wop and surf music flourishes, but don’t be expecting another “Kids.”

    #10:

My intention was to offer an early peek of the album—not an exploitative alternative to buying it when it’s released (isn’t that what the hub is for?). I apologize sincerely if the opposite was construed. Regardless, I replaced the download with a link to the band-sanctioned stream.

“Hey everybody, the album leaked, and we wanted you to be able to hear it from us. We wanted to offer it as a free download but that didn’t make sense to anyone but us”

the band posted this on their website, somehow i doubt they feel overly exploited. it’s 2010, leaks happen (always), and the smartest bands take advantage of it.

Just because you aren’t the “be-all end-all of MGMT news” doesn’t mean you’re suddenly exculpated from posting something that offers and condones a direct avenue to exploiting this band’s hard work. You made a post that irresponsibly allows people to take advantage of this band, yet you don’t see the need to take responsibility for your post because that’s left for people who “care about this band so much”. Regardless, your third reason is just proof that your first two reasons were intellectually dishonest anyway and that clearly you see nothing wrong with what you’ve done. Really shitty.

“Wesleying should have just stayed quiet about it, especially considering how much this blog seems to love MGMT. You guys are posting about them practically on a daily basis now.”

There’ve been four related posts in about 30 days, all directly tied to the whole album-coming-soon-details-getting-out thing. Before that, nothing until December. You wouldn’t expect news to pick up leading to the release?

It’s really fucking lame that Wesleying effectively condoned the early downloading and spread of the new album.

Leaking sucks and really screws up so many bands’ game plans.

    Three assumptions:

    1) MGMT fans interested in the leak are going to find it whether or not it’s posted here. Wesleying is obviously not the be-all end-all of MGMT news.

    2) People who care about the band this much (and feel the institutional pride towards them that many at Wesleyan do) will still support them when the album and/or tour dates come out. I’m planning to buy a physical copy for sure, even more so after hearing the record.

    3) Andrew and Ben won’t be starving any time soon, regardless.
