Stop by the Bone Marrow Registry Drive today at Usdan:
Bone Marrow Transplants (BMT) are given to patients with malfunctioning or diseased blood and immune systems. Donors for a patient are chosen based on tissue typing – matching certain blood proteins. Because tissue type is ethnic-specific, patients of mixed heritage are at a serious disadvantage.
Only 2% of the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP)’s donor pool is of mixed heritage. For a mixed heritage patient to find a donor with the same tissue type (i.e. the EXACT SAME racial/ethnic makeup) and blood type is nearly impossible. Similarly, ethnic minorities make up only 25% of the donor pool. Non-white patients with blood and immune diseases are at a terrible disadvantage.
Because of this, MIX & Shakti are co-hosting a bone marrow REGISTRY drive, specifically targeting donors of color and mixed heritage. To register, you need only fill out medical paperwork and swab the inside of your cheeks with
an oversize Q-tip. The drive will be TUESDAY, MARCH 30, from 12-4PM in USDAN 110. You could save someone’s life.
Date: Tuesday, March 30
