Yes, it’s happening: acclaimed LA-based DJ/postdub-chillstep-whatever beat-maestro Will Wiesenfeld, AKA Baths, is playing Eclectic for free tomorrow night. Post-Linus indie-poppers Treasure Island are opening. For a Wednesday night study break, you can’t do much better than this. As promised, necessary details, YouTube samples, and sweet show poster below.
Baths, writes organizer Ethan Young ’13, “will be coming to Wesleyan for a night of massive beats, enchanting soundscapes, and overwhelming emotions.” If you’re unfamiliar with Baths and/or don’t give a shit about “post-Dubstep,” Cerulean is well worth hearing (legally!). Woozy synth layers, glitchy beats, and occasional falsetto vocals abound; familiar reference points include Flying Lotus, Washed Out, Burial, and Mount Kimbie. Here’s my blurb from Wesleying’s Spring Concert Preview:
Baths is 21-year-old LA-based producer Will Wiesenfeld, whose glitchy, mostly beat-driven 2010 debut, Cerulean, made critical waves on Pitchfork and beyond, blurring the line between Chillwave (see: Neon Indian, Washed Out), Post-Dubstep, and other Genre Titles That Make You Sound Like You Go To Wesleyan. Wiesenfeld’s CA roots also call to mind fellow Los Angeles beat guru Steven Ellison (Flying Lotus), whose last few records seem a natural starting point for Cerulean‘s most overwhelming, meticulously orchestrated moments. The album was recorded entirely in Wiesenfeld’s bedroom last year; I have no idea how it will translate to a live setting, but I’m excited to find out this Wednesday at Eclectic. Stream a few tracks here. [Also, brand new LCD Soundsystem cover here.]
