Don’t Miss Dinaw Mengestu, 2011 Jacob Julien Visiting Writer, At Russell House On Thursday!

Have you heard? Dinaw Mengestu, 2011 Jacob Julien Visiting Writer, will be speaking at Russell House this THURSDAY night! Mengestu will also lead a discussion session on Thursday afternoon.

Dinaw Mengestu has reported for Harper’s and Jane magazine, profiling a young woman who was kidnapped and forced to become a soldier in the brutal war in Uganda. For Rolling Stone he reported on the tragedy in Darfur. Mengestu’s debut novel, The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears, earned him critical acclaim for its account of immigrant experiences in America. He was selected as a winner of the National Book Foundation’s “5 under 35” Award, the 2008 Lannan Literary Fellowship, The Guardian First Book Award in the U.K., and France’s Prix du Premier Roman Etranger. His second novel, How to Read the Air, was published this fall and has earned him further critical praise. In June 2010, Mengestu was selected as one of The New Yorker’s “20 under 40” Writers to Watch.

Mengestu, a graduate of Georgetown University and of Columbia University’s MFA program in fiction, was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in 1978. In 1980 he immigrated to the United States with his mother and sister, joining his father, who had fled the communist revolution in Ethiopia two years before. After spending a number of years in New York, he now lives with his wife and son in Paris.
