Welcome to R&C Weekend!

It’s Friday, and that means that Reunion & Commencement Weekend is finally underway. The full schedule of events can be found here, but the bulk of the readers of this blog are not reun-ing. Here are some of the highlights of that schedule for current students and soon-to-be graduates.

Friday, May 25

Senior Film Theses: 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM

The senior film theses will be on loop at the Center for Film Studies until around 5:00 PM. The digital program will be shown first, followed by the 16mm/Digital program. They’re free this time around, so check them out if you missed them during reading week.

For more detailed descriptions of these, check out the schedule:
  • 2:00 PM: A View from the Federal Appellate Bench (by Anthony Scirica ’62, a judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals) in PAC 001
  • 2:00 PM: The Senior Thesis: A Showcase for Academic Excellence (Audrey Haynes ’12, Sam Long ’12, and Jisan Zaman ’12 will present on their theses) in Russell House
  • 2:30 PM: Book Club with Professor Magda Teter (focusing on Israel Yuval’s Two Nations in Your Womb: Perception of Jews and Christians in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages) in Judd 116
  • 2:30 PM: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (a secular program of meditation and yoga by Dr. Brian M. Shelley ’87) in Multi-use Rooms 2 & 3 in the Freeman Athletic Center
  • 3:30 PM: Brighter Dawns (a presentation by a number of current Wesleyan undergraduates) in Shanklin 107
work divided by time: 7:00 – 10:00 PM

A sound installation by Assistant Professor of Music Paula Matthusen at the Van Vleck Observatory featuring a number of handmade wooden instruments modeled after Christmas pyramid toys.

WESEMINAR: 7,000 Women: 7:00 PM

Performances by a number of female Wesleyan alumnae. It will be held at Crowell Concert Hall.

WESEMINAR: Beasts of the Southern Wild: 8:00 PM

Pre-releaste film screening of the 2012 Sundance Film Festival winner for Grand Jury Prize. Written and directed by Benh Zeitlin ’04 (whom Zach interviewed here). Michael Gottwald ’06 and Dan Janvey ’06, producers, will present.

In other significant R&C, this reunion cycle seems particularly action-packed with high-profile alums, including but limited to:

  • Martin Benjamin ’57‘s 55th reunion
  • Daniel “Lemony Snicket” Handler ’92‘s 20th reunion
  • Joss Whedon ’87‘s 25th reunion
  • Himanshu Suri ’07‘s fifth reunion
  • Lin-Manual Miranda ’02‘s tenth reunion
  • Santi White (Santigold) ’97‘s fifteenth reunion

Any word on whether these alums are on campus this weekend?

Lin-Manuel Miranda spoke to me while I was working the registration table. Dream come true.
