First Meeting of the Undergrad Math Club

Jim Stankewicz, Visiting Assistant Professor of Math, will give a talk entitled: “Art and Mathematics: Esther, Lenstra and “The Print Gallery”

Although many take for granted that the art of M.C. Escher has a mathematical character, Escher himself denied any mathematical ability.

To investigate this seeming incongruity, we will compare and contrast Escher’s artistic practice with the practice of a mathematician. As a case study, we will especially consider his 1956 lithograph “The Print Gallery” and contrast it with the way H. W. Lenstra revisited it in the early 2000s. While this talk won’t have any prerequisites besides a willingness to learn, some familiarity with the complex numbers will be helpful.

Free Lunch will be served.

Date: Thursday, October 11
Time: 12:00-1:00 PM
Place: Woodhead Lounge
Cost: Free!
