Study Abroad in Berlin

Meet Jochen Wohfeil, Adjunct Associate Professor of the Practice in German and Resident Director of  Duke in Berlin.

Jochen Wohlfeil, usually omnipresent in Berlin as Director of Duke University’s academic program there but in residence in Durham this semester, will give a presentation on Duke in Berlin and discuss student life in Germany’s greatest city.

Politically Pregnant: A Lecture and Discussion

Birth and breastfeeding have recently become a highly politicized issues in the US and will affect most of our lives at some point, yet they are rarely discussed on college campuses. This presentation will feature two prominent birth policy scholars, who will discuss their experiences teaching childbirth education and working in lactation consulting. We’ll learn about approaches, common practices and research regarding birth and breastfeeding in the context of the current culture, media and medical models, and we will open to a group discussion about reproductive medical policy and social movements in the US.

Education Policy Speaker Series: Barbara Madeloni

Insert snarky crack about how Andy Ribner ’14 should talk about education for once:

Come hear Barbara Madeloni, former director of the secondary school teacher preparation program at UMass Amherst, speak about teacher preparation and her struggles with the changing landscape of evaluation. Madeloni, despite excellent reviews, was asked to leave when she spoke out against a new certification process run by for-profit education company Pearson.

Queer Retreat
