Bridging the Gulf: Communicating Science —and Uncertainty—After the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill

Reddy at the Oil Spill

Claire Miller ’15 writes in:

Cathy Shufro, a visiting professor from Yale, presents Christopher M. Reddy, PhD, who will be at Downey House to discuss issues surrounding the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Reddy works for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and his talk at Wesleyan will offer insights into the scientific communities response to  crises.

Christopher Reddy has a strong interest in how scientists explain their work to the public-especially in the midst of a crisis. During the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, he served as academic liaison for the U.S. Coast Guard’s Unified Command, collaborating with the EPA, the fish and Wildlife Service, BP and the defense department in informing the public about the spill.

Reddy’s research interests include marine pollution, marine natural products and petroleum geochemistry. Reddy has written op-ed essays on science for 20 publications, including the Boston Globe and Science.

This talk is sponsored by the Writing Certificate.
