Yusef Komunyakaa Reads at Russell House – Wednesday, 8:00 PM


Sarah Chrystler ’13, now a Kim-Frank Fellow, sends us this blurb about an epic reading at Russell House this Wednesday:

Celebrated poet Yusef Komunyakaa will read from his new work on Wednesday, September 11th, 2013 at 8:00 p.m. in Wesleyan University’s, Russell House, 350 High Street, Middletown, CT.

Yusef Komunyakaa is a Pulitzer Prize winning poet and the author of twenty books of poetry. He received a bronze star for his service as a journalist in the Vietnam War and is a professor and senior distinguished poet in the graduate Creative Writing Program at New York University. Komunyakaa will celebrate the release of a limited edition of “Love in the Time of War.”

“Love in the Time of War” is designed and produced by Middletown’s own Robin Price, Printer & Publisher. Testimony: A Tribute to Charlie Parker (Wesleyan) and Love in the Time of War (Robin Price, Printer & Publisher) are releasing in fall 2013. Price will kick off the event with a brief explanation of her work on the silk and aluminum book.

Co-sponsored by Friends of Olin Library, the Center for African American Studies, Writing at Wesleyan, the English Department, the Music Department, and Wesleyan University Press.

A reception and book signing will follow the reading.

Informational Session on Paid Positions at Long Lane Farm

Ross Levin ’15 wants to get dirty with you:
Bon Appetit, the food service company at Wesleyan, wonderfully and thankfully provides the Long Lane student-run Farm here with wages for student workers (including work study!).  If you like to play in the dirt, want to learn about growing your own food, or just want to get out from inside the box you’re in or out from behind the box you’re staring at, join us at an informational meeting about these positions (also, come volunteer at the farm every Saturday morning and other times!!).  All levels of experience are encouraged to come, but students who have volunteered at the farm for at least one semester will be given priority.  See you there!

Chief Diversity Officer Search: Open Forums

Winter Dance is a dance concert that closes the semester with pieces choreographed by Junior and Senior Dance majors. This year’s concert will feature new works by Tess Jonas, Emily Jones, Stellar Levy, Miranda Orbach, Ibironke Otusile, Min Suh, Emily Weitzman, and Harry Zhu. We all want you to come audition and be in our pieces!

Come to one of these two audition times on Wednesday, September 11 in Schonberg Dance Studio on Pine St! Be ready to move!

Stethoscope Press Looking For Editors


Alec Harris ’14 writes:

Stethoscope Press, which publishes several original any-genre student chapbooks each year, is looking for editors! Editors will select proposals this fall and will spend several months working with the authors to create and design daring and beautiful books. Previous publications included a book of short stories, a graphic novel, a book of poems, a collage memoir, and a novella. Meditation at Buddhist House

Delaine Winn ’16 wishes to enlighten you about tranquil times at Buddhist House:

Starting this week, Buddhist House will be continuing the ages-old tradition of meditational practice at Wes in our beautiful meditation room. The house will be open for meditation every week day at 9 am, as well as at 6 pm on Mondays and Thursdays.

No experience is necessary, and all are welcome. Come meet great people and also maybe attain nirvana. See you soon!
