Calling all clowns!Vatzlav Auditions

“’Vatzlav’ is a three-ring circus of a comedy, cataloguing the injustices – and the sheer craziness – of civilization.” – New York
Times

The Play.
In VATZLAV (by Polish dramatist S?awomir Mro?ek), a castaway slave in search of a new life and identity washes up on a remote island after a tempest leaves him shipwrecked. Here he encounters a zany cast of characters including a blind Oedipus, a wealthy bloodsucking couple, and their son who pretends to be a bear while instigating a revolution. This panoramic Polish political farce spins a bizarre and biting tale of the absurd mechanisms of power in 77 brisk episodic scenes. Wesleyan alumna Lily Whitsitt (’06) directs. Please check with the Theater office or Stage Manager Sivan Battat (sbattat[at]wesleyan[dot]edu) for a copy of the play.

The Process.
New York-based director Lily Whitsitt (’06) will draw from physical theater and clowning traditions for this production, inspired by artists such as the Kipper Kids and Jan Svankmajer. Rehearsals will begin on Monday, February 17 and be 6 days a week until the performances April 10-12. Please note ***there will be rehearsals over Spring Break***. March 6-12 there will be no rehearsals. However rehearsals will resume March 13.

The Details.
Auditions will take place on SUNDAY, JANUARY 26 from 12:00- 3:00pm, with callbacks that evening from 5:30- 7:30pm. Please prepare BOTH 1) a comedic monologue (3 minutes) of your choosing, or one of the monologue texts selected by the director (posted on the callboard), AND 2) a 1 minute physical clowning bit with no words. You are encouraged to play a role of the opposite gender! Please contact Stage Manager Sivan Battat (sbattat@wesleyan.edu) with any questions.

We are especially looking for clowns, musicians, improvisers, pranksters, cross-dressers, and silly, campy performers willing to dive in to the wacky world of this play! COME PLAY WITH US!
